Our food - Ayruveda food
In Ayurveda philosophy you are what you eat, so your diet is of utmost importance.
At Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara we make everything from scratch. All our ingredients (organic wherever possible) are sourced locally, either from the hotel’s own garden or local farmers.
The principles of our Heritance cuisine already emphasise healthy food that tastes good. On top of this, our chefs and our doctors work very closely together to adapt our menus to an Ayurveda way of life, and have devised menus to suit every dosha.
Our restaurant offers both buffets and set menus. All buffet dishes are labelled showing which dishes are best for which doshas, and the doctors will advise you on what is best for you. Partners or families who are not undergoing treatment are under no dietary restrictions.
Meals are accompanied by warm water – we advise you to drink at least two litres daily. We also provide free herbal tea throughout the day (10am – 5pm), or you can order fresh juice from our juice bar. This includes exotic fruits that may be new to you, like belli or wood apple, as well as more familiar watermelon and mango.
Nestled within acres of lush tropical gardens, Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara combines luxurious accommodation and professional Ayurveda treatment facilities for a holiday that will leave you feeling revitalised and ready to face the world again.
Previously the Neptune Hotel, a conventional all-inclusive beach resort, Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara now specialises in Ayurveda treatments to combat stress, help rejuvenation or promote weight loss. Maha Gedara means “ancestral home” – we chose the new name because the Neptune Hotel was the first hotel built by Aitken Spence.
This beach front hotel represents tranquillity at its best. This is evident from the moment you arrive, as you transfer at the gates from a car to a golf buggy that silently glides past rows of frangipane trees. at our charming Ayurveda resort. Sri Lanka has many unique local customs some of which we have incorporated into your holiday experience; for example after registering, you light a traditional brass lamp to symbolise a new beginning.
Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara was originally designed by local architect Geoffrey Bawa, famous for blending interior and exterior spaces, connecting buildings with the natural environment. The refurbishment carried out in 2010/2011 was handled by his student Vinod Jayasinghe.
Two simple, white-arched wings frame the pool on either side, overlooking the soothing waves lapping on the beach. Decoration is elegantly minimal – perhaps stylised reliefs of palmyrah and breadfruit trees on the walls, or local tree seedlings in coconut shells on the tables.
You will spend much of your time in our specialist Ayurveda centre, where you will be treated in the calming atmosphere of our secluded treatment rooms with their own water features.
We provide Wi-Fi in the hotel lobby area and there is a computer with internet connection in our library if you need it.
But just because you are here for therapy doesn’t preclude gracious living. Our stylish rooms and delicious but healthy food ensure that you don’t miss out on creature comforts. We never forget that you are here for a holiday, not a boot camp!
And although your treatment schedule may not allow much time for excursions outside the hotel, our crafts centre lets you see artisans at work and even have a go yourself.
Above all, we pride ourselves on providing relaxed, friendly hospitality. Our managers and doctors mingle with guests in the restaurant and lounge in the evenings – feel free to chat and ask them any questions.
We look forward to welcoming you to Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara!
Your stay at Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara is a perfect opportunity to wind down and relax, away from the stress of everyday life.
Our visitors enjoy immersing themselves in the calm routine of daily treatments and healthy, nutritious meals. If you’re interested in learning about traditional Sri Lankan handicrafts, you can see award-winning artisans at work in our unique Crafts centre and even have a go yourself.
Our swimming pool
Our sun loungers among the Frangipane trees by the swimming pool are a popular place to catch up on those books you always meant to read, while sipping a freshly squeezed fruit juice.
The pool is attended by a lifeguard, and we provide free towels.
Open: 7am – 6pm daily
If you run out of reading material, our library has a selection of books in several languages donated by previous guests. We also provide local newspapers.
If you are desperate to catch up with your email, there is also a computer terminal with internet access here for a fee – ask reception for the password.
Our activities and excursions
To get the maximum benefit from your treatment programme, we recommend that you do not skip any medicine or treatment. You will be having daily treatments, but they are usually in either the morning or afternoon, so you will be able to go out on half-day excursions if you want.
You can learn what the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is doing to help save local turtles, or go on a river trip on the Madu Ganga to see mangrove forests and prawn fishermen. Or you can see how moonstones are mined.
It’s also fascinating to compare the landscaping styles of the Bawa brothers – hotel architect Geoffrey at Lunuganga and his younger sibling Bevis at Brief Garden.
Slightly further afield, Galle is worth a visit for its brooding fort and boutique stores.
If you do not have your own transport, we are happy to arrange a car and driver for you. Please ask at reception for details.
Some activities or excursions may be seasonal or may be cancelled in poor weather. Participation is at your own risk.
